Knife Maintenance With A Honing Rod

Honing a knife with a honing rod is a quick and easy way to maintain the sharpness of your blade. A honing rod, also known as a honing steel, is a rod-shaped tool that is used to straighten and realign the edge of a knife. By using a honing rod at a 20 degree angle, you can effectively hone your knife and keep it in top condition. Here's how to do it:

  1. Begin by selecting a honing rod that is appropriate for your knife. A rod with a finer grit will be better for maintaining the edge of a sharp knife.

  2. Hold the honing rod in your dominant hand and the knife in your other hand. Position the knife so that the blade is touching the honing rod at a 20 degree angle. (A good drill is to hold it at 90 degrees, half of that is 45 degrees, half of that is 22.5 degrees, and bring it in slightly for an approximate 20 degree angle)

  3. Slowly and gently draw the blade down the length of the honing rod, applying light pressure as you go. Make sure to maintain the 20 degree angle as you move the blade down the rod.

  4. Once you have completed one pass, flip the knife over and repeat the process on the other side of the blade.

  5. Continue honing the knife in this way until you have completed 5-10 passes on each side of the blade.

  6. To test the sharpness of your knife, try slicing through a piece of paper or a tomato. If the knife is sharp, it should easily glide through the material without any resistance. If the knife is still dull, shoot me a message and I will be sure to get your knife SHINARP!

By following these steps, you can effectively hone your knife with a honing rod at a 20 degree angle and keep it sharp and ready for use.
